Marketing Research - Tutorial 6

Overview

Sampling - Stratified random sampling; Types of sampling

Non-sampling Error

Data entry and basic analyses

First 1/3 of class - Go to Ch. 9 in the exercise book. Material on pages 128-134 is useful. We will be using the software under Stratified sample analysis. Solve Questions 1-3 on pages 135-136. Write down your work as you go along.
(Points to ponder: Which is the best stratification variable ? Why ? Do you now understand why stratified samples may be more efficient than simple random samples ? Is there a way of improving on the most efficient result you obtained today ?)
Learning points
Stratified sampling - Divide sample into strata & pick simple random samples from
each strata
Estimating confidence intervals
Proportionate/Disproportionate stratified sampling

Second part of class - Go to Eastern Food Distributors in the menu.
Examine the effect of incentives on response rates and results using no incentives, then using one questionnaire plus a warning and reminder post card, and then all possible incentives. Write down your observations on response rates and findings.
Examine the effect of definition of the population by using a random sample of adults and then adults who went to a restaurant at leat twice last year.
Perform a survey of non-respondents to assess non-response error.
Perform a survey of tourists.
(Point to ponder: How do we account for non-response error in our decision making ?)
Learning points
Non-response error
Response rate
Contact rate
Increasing response rate
Adjusting results for non-response

Third part of class - View each video shown and note down issues in sampling such as the sampling procedures used as well as issues in non-sampling error.

Last part of class - Discussion of data analyses.
