Business 101

Business 101 introduces College of Business freshmen to Professional Responsibility in Business. The course begins by developing the concept of professional responsibility within a personal and interpersonal context. Students will discover the meaning of professional responsibility in their career and in professional relationships. The course continues by expanding the concept of professional responsibility to an ethical balance of the profit motive and corporate responsibility within the global context. The course has the following four modules:

Module 1: Professional Awareness

This module builds the students’ awareness of themselves as young professionals. The module emphasizes how involvement and participation in one’s community empowers professional development. This module also builds awareness of college and campus resources, and begins development of the skills necessary to use those resources.

Module 2: Professional Relationships

This module provides opportunities to actively develop respectful professional relationships. The module emphasizes taking personal responsibility as part of a team. Module activities provide opportunities to discover how diversity influences the professional community. These activities also encourage acceptance and adoption of professional attitudes, and identification of opportunities to develop or improve basic professional skills.

Module 3: Responsibility in Business and Society

This module expands professional responsibility into the context of business organizations and society. The module introduces business organizations, stakeholder incentives and corporate governance. It continues with exploration of corporate social responsibility and ethical decision making in the corporate context.

Module 4: Responsibility in the Global World of the 21st Century

This module introduces students to the global potential of professional responsibility. In this module students explore poverty, subsistence living, diverse cultures and environmental sustainability. The module encourages students to discover that ethical, socially responsible business decisions that support an environmentally sustainable global future also can promote the profit motive.
