Minor in Business for Non-Business Majors

The Business Minor is designed for students pursuing majors in colleges other than the College of Business (BUS). The minor provides course work through which a student can obtain skills and learn tools used in business and learn the theories, techniques, and concepts of accounting, marketing, management, and finance. The Business Minor provides a background that will be useful for non-business students who wish to pursue careers in their majors by working for a business or by starting their own business.

The Business Minor is not available to Business, LAS Finance, or Technology and Management minor students and is not to be considered as preparation for transfer into BUS to pursue a business major or a business degree.

Admission to the minor is competitive, based on the cumulative GPA of the pool of applicants. All courses required for the minor, including pre-requisites, must be taken for a grade - exceptions given for AP credit. Students are admitted by application into the Business minor. Applications are accepted during the month of MAY each year.

Application Requirements:

1) Have at least 60 hours completed by the end of the spring semester of application.

2) Have completed or be concurrently enrolled in, during the spring semester of application, the four prerequisite courses:

  • MATH 234 Calculus for Business I
  • CS 105 Intro to Computing for Non-Tech
  • ECON 102 Principles of Microeconomics
  • STAT 100 Statistics I

3) All students must be in academic good standing (2.0 gpa or higher). In addition a cumulative 2.0 gpa is required in the four prerequisite courses.

4) The College of Business accepts the Statement of Intent to Pursue a Campus-Approved Minor as the official application form. Applications will be reviewed by the college in June/July. All applicants will be notified of a decision by early August. Planning to pursue a Business minor does not offer special registration privileges.

5) Only students officially admitted by the College of Business may pursue the minor.

Additional Requirements:

  • ACCY 200 Fundamentals of Accounting (Fall - Junior Year) ACCY 200 enrollment is restricted to approved minor students.
  • BADM 320 Principles of Marketing (Spring)
  • FIN 221 Corporate Finance (Fall - Senior Year, Prereq: ACCY 200 and STAT 100)
  • BADM 310 Management and Organizational Behavior (Spring)

Note: ACCY 200, BADM 310, 320, and FIN 221 must be taken on the UIUC campus. No exceptions for Study Abroad credits.

  • The college cannot guarantee enrollment in more than one course per semester.
  • Enrollment for courses in the minor is structured to allow students to enroll in one business course per semester for a total of 4 semesters.
  • Exceptions will not be allowed to change the class sequencing; BADM courses will be available only in the spring and ACCY/FIN only in the fall.
  • Students from across campus should be able to enroll in the prerequisite courses, but will experience registration restrictions - "major restriction" - when attempting to enroll in the upper division courses (BADM, FIN, and ACCY).
  • The Business Minor is not available to Business, LAS Finance, or Technology and Management minor students and is not to be considered as preparation for transfer into BUS to pursue a business major or a business degree.
