The backhoe loader is a versatile machine
that combines the features of a wheel loader with those of an excavator. The wheel loader
can move materials such as earth and gravel from one ground location to another or load
them from a ground location into a carrier such as a dump truck. An all wheel steering
option allows the operator to maneuver the rear wheels independently of the front wheels,
or together. All wheel steering adds versatility by allowing a tighter turning circle for
working around obstacles and in congested work sites, as well as a wider stance for more
stability when grading and leveling on slopes. All wheel steering allows
"crabbing," which offsets the rear weight of the machine away from the job
(e.g., to prevent a cave-in when backfilling a trench with a side dump bucket). |
An optional integrated toolcarrier (IT) loader adds work versatility to the loader with a
parallel-lift feature and a quick coupler for fast, easy connection to a wide range of
tools. An IT pallet fork combined with the parallel-lift feature keeps loads level
throughout the lift range to move palleted materials around the job site. IT
materials-handling arms lift and place non-pallet objects such as cement manholes and
pipes. Other IT attachments include hydraulic angle blades, asphalt cutters,
hydraulic brooms, and a range of special-purpose loader buckets (e.g., a skeleton bucket
to rake roots while land clearing). The IT allows customers to do more with tool
attachments instead of buying more machines. For building construction equipment users,
more versatility means more applications, more business, and greater profits.

| The backhoe's excavator can dig trenches in the earth
using a curved boom, side-casting the removed earth (for later backfilling) or loading it
into a carrier such as a dump truck. Load sensing hydraulics allow full digging forces at
all engine speeds. The backhoe boom reaches and digs where needed, even over obstacles. An
optional extendable stick adds four feet to digging depth or dig reach. A longer reach is
important for greater side-casting of material or when it is inconvenient to reposition
the machine. |

Backhoe attachments add work versatility with tools such as hydraulic hammers, vibratory
plate compactors, hydraulic augers and a variety of backhoe buckets. A ripper
bucket, for example, is useful for breaking through tough materials such as clay soil or
frost. A cold planer attachment breaks through asphalt streets.
Caterpillar's newest backhoe loader product line is the C-Series. The C-series is designed
to get the most from the widest variety of work tools to allow customers to handle jobs
faster and easier than any other backhoe loader in the market. Specifications for
the C-Series backhoe loaders include: |
