Scientific progress offers both challenges and opportunities for countries throughout the Asia-Pacific. Advances in plant genetics may offer increased food yields, alleviating hunger, but face resistance from those concerned about genetically modified food. Pollution has become a critical concern, possibly even threatening the Beijing Olympics.  Can advances in clean energy production and pollution control offset the impact of increasing economic activity?
