AND UNIVERSITY NEWS Can forecasts
of earnings growth be trusted by investors? If the past is any guide,
no, according to a study by University of Illinois finance professors
Louis K.C. Chan and Josef Lakonishok, working with Jason Karceski of the
University of Florida. A comprehensive study of the earnings rates of
public companies casts serious doubt on the reliability of such forecasts.
Cele
Otnes, a marketing professor, along with Mary Ann McGrath, a marketing
professor at Loyola University, has discovered that men often shop purposefully,
evaluate alternatives, bargain, shop in so-called "feminine"
stores, and "sometimes even admit to liking to shop." Otnes'
research was included in a news release from the University of Illinois
News Bureau with follow-up stories in the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette. According
to research conducted by Brian Wansink in Business Administration, most
people eat more if they are served more. Wansink was interviewed by NBC
staff from Chicago in late July for a network story broadcast in early
August. The MSNBC cable channel rebroadcast the piece throughout August
and the MSNBC website offers reporter Jim Avila's full story in an online
video. The University
Office for Planning and Budgeting (OPB) coordinates an annual survey of
graduates that asks them to evaluate their academic experiences and to
report on their current activities. This information is provided to the
Illinois Board of Higher Education as required by state law. This year,
OPB is making available on the web a feature that lets you customize a
report. Data for the last 3 surveys are currently available. E*Prairie,
an online newsletter covering Midwest technology business news, recently
reported on the Illinois Technology Enterprise Corporation that, in September,
hosted the second annual techShow, a showcase of companies and government
agencies that fuel the Champaign-Urbana technology economy. Several CCBA
units helped plan the techShow. Five
CCBA alumni are challenging their fellow alumni to help out the college.
