Apply to the Illinois MSF - Details

  1. Complete an online application for summer term
    (registration required)
    Note: the MSF begins in June; there is no fall entry.

    The University of Illinois uses a single online application for all graduate programs, therefore not all information asked on the application is relevant to the MSF program. Before you complete the online application, please note the following:

    1. After completing the online application, please follow the steps on the MSF application page and send all supporting documentation to the MSF program office.
    2. Your online application will be forwarded electronically from the University Office of Admissions to the MSF Program office. Our office will acknowledge receipt of your application by email and provide you with a login/password so that you can track the status of your application.
    3. The MSF program is a self-supported graduate program within the Finance Department in the Business College. The program does not provide financial aid, fellowships or scholarships to program participants.

  3. Pay application fee ($60 domestic/$75 international)

    The University of Illinois application fee is $60 for domestic students and $75 for international students. The fee can be paid by credit card when you submit your online application. If you do now wish to pay by credit card, you can mail the application fee directly to the MSF program office. Be sure to mail the check with other supporting documents or be sure to attach a note that clearly indicates your name, address and birth date. With so many applications, it is not uncommon for the program to receive multiple applications from people with the same name.

  5. Provide certified transcripts and degree certificates

    Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate schools you have attended must be provided to the University along with official degree certificates. If the date and degree conferred are included on the transcript, no degree certificate is needed. Original or certified transcripts, and degree certificates (if needed) must be provided before formal admission can be given.

    Official transcripts should be received by the MSF program in a sealed envelope provided directly from the issuing academic institution. These records must indicate all subjects studied, all grades or examination results received in each subject (whether passed or failed), and all degrees and diplomas earned. If your transcript does not indicate the degree earned and the conferred date, a certified copy of your degree certificate must be provided.

    If your academic transcripts and degree certificate are not in English, they must be accompanied by an official English translation. Credentials must be certified by an officer of the educational institution issuing the documents or by an official employed by the US Embassy or Consulate. Where possible, you should request the principal or registrar of the institution to forward your credentials to the U of Illinois for you.

  7. Provide official GMAT or GRE scores

    MSF applicants are required to submit a GMAT or GRE test score. All current and previous results must be reported to the University of Illinois electronically.

    GMAT Scores

    Scores are reported electronically by PearsonVue. Please self report your score on your application and request PearsonVue to report your score electronically to the University of Illinois MSF program using code "VKRTK14".

    GRE Scores

    Scores for the GRE are reported electronically by the Electronic Testing Service (ETS). Please self report your score on your application and request ETS to report your score electronically to the University of Illinois (Institution Code 1836), Department Code 00.

    If you have not yet taken the GMAT or GRE, please indicate the date you intend to take the exam in your application. On your test day, please fax the unofficial score report to the MSF office at 217-244-9022 and arrange for an official score report to be sent electronically.

    Application files will not be reviewed until a GMAT or GRE score is provided.

  9. Provide 3 letters of reference

    Each applicant must submit 3 letters of reference from academic and/or business sources. Letters of reference should be completed online or sent directly to:

  11. Provide resume (with exact dates of employment)

    All applications must include a current resume. The resume should include exact dates of employment and clearly indicate whether the applicant is currently employed or not. Any relevant certifications such as the CFA should be included as well. The resume can be sent or emailed to the MSF office at the address below.

  13. Provide written statement

    (in 300 words or less describe your area of interest in finance and what your goals are upon completion of the MSF program)

    Please submit an essay of no more than 300 words that encompasses the following:

    • Discuss the choices that have led you to your current career path and position
    • Express your career goals and how the ILLINOIS MSF will help you to achieve these goals
    • Indicate your desired position upon completion of the ILLINOIS MSF program
    Your essay can be sent or emailed to the MSF office at the address below.

International Students

  1. Provide official English score

    If English is not your native language you are required to submit the results of the TOEFL or IELTS as evidence of English proficiency. An official score must be provided directly from TOEFL/ETS or IELTS to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

      Applicants that have taken the TOEFL should request the Educational Testing Service send scores to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign using institution code 1836 and department code 00.

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing Service)

      Applicants who have already taken the IELTS should request that IELTS send scores to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

    • Waiver of TOEFL or IELTS

      • If you have studied full-time for at least two of the past five years at a University in a country that uses English as an official language
        OR
      • You have completed a degree within the last five years from such an institution; you may be waived of the TOEFL requirement.

  3. Provide evidence of financial support for duration of program

    All students that require a student visa to enroll at the University of Illinois must provide evidence of financial support before the University can provide the appropriate visa procurement documents (I20 or DS 2019).

    All applicants requiring a visa must submit a completed and signed Evidence of Financial Support form along with original documents evidencing funds. The University has strict requirements as to which assets and funds are allowed to be used to evidence financial support. Please read the requirements carefully before submitting your financial documentation.

    Declaration and Certification of Finances.     The University can not accept Declarations that do not comply with the Acceptable Evidence of Financial Support.

    Sponsored Students

    Students sponsored by their employer, government or other agency or institution must submit a formal letter of sponsorship that clearly indicates the total amount of support provided and length of support. The sponsorship letter must be on company letterhead, have an original authorized signature and bear a current date.

  5. Provide I20/DS2019 Request form

    The University is required to collect the information on the I20/DS2019 Request form to obtain approval for either of these documents from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. The form can be completed in either of two ways:

    • The Student Verification Form can be completed online by logging into your online University application.
      OR
    • The form can be printed and mailed to the address below or faxed to 217-244-9022.
