A team of five accounting students placed first in the National Student Case Study Seminar, sponsored by retired partners from Deloitte & Touche. Six schools were invited to participate in the seminar which was held at the Deloitte & Touched Development Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Illinois team was judged the champion. Each student on the Illinois team received a $1,000 scholarship. Josh Rosett, assistant professor of accountancy, accompanied the team to Scottsdale. He and Dick Dietrich, the Deloitte & Touche Professor of Accountancy, coached the team. |

UNIVERSITY RECOGNITION FOR COMMERCE STUDENTS
Twenty Commerce students were among the 100 outstanding seniors selected to receive the Senior 100 Honorary. The commerce winners for this year are: Shane Allord, Jeffrey N. Bobis, Erica Brown, Jennifer A. Cox, Jennifer E. Flynn, Bryce Fuller, Matthew W. Goden, Andreq J. Grieve, Kimberly A. Growney, Edwin Kim, Dristian Lindgren, Candice C. Meng, Akbar Mohamed, Ella Morales, William D. Orkin, Kathy Parsons, Renee Sabo, Kartik Tamhane, Suzanna C. Tutoky, and Darby L. Willis. |
Project Discovery students on the prize-winning team were: Adrienne Ball, Tricia Kerrigan, Amit Punwani, Bernard Shim, and Ting-Ting Yang. The four-person team competing in the 1995 EDS Challenge took second place. There were 33 teams participating in this international competition. Dan Stone, associate professor of accountancy, was the faculty coach for Erica Brown, marketing; Kara Hagen, marketing; Michael Macaluso, management; and Charles Tripp, finance. The Illinois team placed 3rd in the 1995 Arthur Andersen Tax Challenge. Faculty coaches Jon Davis and Gene Willis, from accountancy, worked with four Project Discovery students, Erin Campbell, Sara Campion, Michelle Leman, and Darby Willis. |
A number of students are recognized at the Awards Banquet held at the end of the spring semester. A partial list of the recipients follows.
The Council of Presidents, the umbrella organization for all Commerce student clubs, presents two major student awards each year. These awards recognize leadership, service, and general excellence. Winners of this year's President's Award are: Kimberly A. Growney, past president of Phi Gamma Nu. Victore E. Monroy, past president of the Latino Association for Business Students, received honorable mention. Winner of the Student Leadership Award was Charlton M. Woods, Phi Gamma Nu. Winners of the Top 10 Seniors Award, sponsored by Commerce Council are; Erica Brown, Sara E. Camion, Kimberly Growney, Jennifer E. Flynn, William Orking Marina A. Nudell, Akbar Mohamed, Renee Sabo, John Schlichtman, and Amy Wen.
Each of the business fraternities present scholarships keys to recognize superior academic performance. The winners this year are:
Amy Gabriel received the Phi Gamma Nu Rose Award for service to the organization.
Aaron Bishop was selected to receive the Commerce Alumni Association Scholarship Award in recognition of his academic achievement. He is studying in Japan this year and will return to complete his undergraduate degree in the fall of 1997.
Joan Phillips, a marketing doctoral student working with Professor Seymour Sudman, is the recipient of the 1996 Institute for the Study of Business Markets Doctoral Support Award. This is a national competition for dissertation proposals.
Ann Cummings, an organizational behavior doctoral student working with Professor Greg Oldham, took second place in the national INFORMS dissertation proposal competition.
Georgine Kyda, a student in international business working with Professor Jean-Francois Hennart, received an Irwin Dissertation Research Fellowship to conduct research in England during the 1996-97 academic year.
Robert Holbrook, an organizational behavior doctoral student working with Professor Carol Kulik, received an Irwin Dissertation Research Fellowship.

The Undergraduate Affairs Office administers a number of student scholarships and awards. At the 1996 Awards Banquet, twenty-four individual and corporate donors underwrote awards to eight-six undergraduate students. The awards ranged from $500 - $2,500, totaling $129,825.
