Since its founding, the University of Illinois has had a three-part mission Teaching, Research, and Service. To showcase the service activities that the university has been engaged in for over 100 years, Chancellor Michael Aiken has launched Partnership Illinois.
highlights the many programs already undertaken by university faculty and staff to help the people of Illinois. It also provides an infrastructure that allows us to respond to the state's changing needs. You can access Partnership Illinois on the world wide web directly at http://www.oc.uiuc.edu/oc/pi or through the university home page at http://www.uiuc.edu. There is an easy-to-search index of more than 400 university public service and outreach activities statewide.
In the college, we interact with the public in a variety of ways, especially through the activities of the Bureau of Economic and Business research, the Center for International Business Education and Research and the International Trade Center. There are other Learning Centers in the college that also have outreach components.
The Bureau of Economic & Business Research is concerned with the collection and analysis of state, regional and national economic data. Publications of the bureau include the Illinois Business Review, a quarterly publication that presents analyses of economic issues in the state and national, with emphasis on the effect on Illinois. Written for the general public, as well as business and government leaders, the winter issue each year is devoted to "The Illinois Economic Outlook." The bureau also publishes the Illinois Statistical Abstract, a comprehensive collection of economic & demographic data for the state, and the Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, a scholarly journal affiliated with the Midwest Economic Association and the Midwest Finance Association.
The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, supporting the office for an additional three years. The college will receive $220,000 per year in support of CIBER activities. Lee Alston, professor of economics, is the director.
Last spring, CIBER sponsored an International Conference on Longitudinal Research on Foreign Market Entry. Although most businesses must participate in foreign markets in order to survive in today's business climate, academic research in this area is hampered by the emphasis on single discipline, U.S.-centered research. Thus, one goal of the conference was to encourage cooperation and joint projects between researchers. Researchers from around the world in a variety of disciplines gathered on the University of Illinois campus to address two basic questions: What criteria are used to choose among the possible ways to enter foreign markets? How does subsequent performance correlate with the choice? All papers were empirical and longitudinal. Jean-Francois Hennart, professor of business administration, was the conference organizer. The conference was funded in part through a grant from International Programs and Studies.
The International Trade Center (ITC), created in 1994 by the first CIBER grant, received independent funding from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA) this year. In today's global economy, no one in business can afford to ignore international trade. But entering the international arena requires specialized knowledge. The ITC offers a wide range of resources to help companies evaluate export markets and identify opportunities. Services include individual counseling, market research, a trade reference library, seminars and workshops, and exporter's forums. Through an established international network, which includes DCCA and the Illinois Small Business Development Centers, companies have access to a variety of export programs and services at the local, state, and international levels.

| Through the Business Advisory Council, a group of more than 100 business leaders in the state and around the nation, the college keeps in touch with the changing face of business around the world. This partnership has been going strong since 1968. Wilma Smelcher (BS 1971, MBA 1973), executive vice president of Bank of America, is the 1996-97 president. She succeeds Larry Austermiller (BS, MS Accountancy, 1963, 1965), partner in Arthur Andersen & Co., L.L.P., as chair. Lester McKeever (BS Accountancy, 1995), managing partner of Washington, Pittman & McKeever, is the current vice-chair. The organization meets with faculty and administratiors twice a year to share ideas, learn from each other, and discuss college issues. Recently the focus has been on examining the public image of the college. The goal is to apply the considerable clout and resources of the BAC to help us enhance that image. | ||
BRINGING THE OUTSIDE WORLD INTO THE CLASSROOM
Many of our business classes tend to be theoretical and analytic. To round out the picture, the college has always relied on members of the business community to share their practical experience and expertise with our students. They are the ones who can really "tell it like it is." Throughout the academic year, business leaders participate in a variety of programs at the college, both formal and informal.
The Executive-in-Residence Program brings executives to campus for 2-3 days to talk in a number of classes and interact with the faculty and administration; the Emerson Cammack Lecture Series named for our former Dean of Undergraduate Studies who was a leader in the field of insurance bring an insurance executive to campus every Friday to speak to students in the Principles of Insurance class. This series is funded by a grant from the Million Dollar Round Table to honor Millard Grauer, class of 1949 and a member of the Business Advisory Council; the Professional Lyceum brings business leaders from several fields to address accounting students in a class taught by Professor Art Wyatt each fall. During the spring semester, MBA students participate in a seminar on Managing Change. High-level executives are invited to campus each week to interact with the first-year MBA students. There are also numerous individual professors who invite business executives to address their classes.
