Summary of Programs
The State of Illinois changed the educational requirements of candidates for
the Uniform CPA Examination in Illinois. Effective January 1, 2001,
Illinois CPA examination candidates must have earned 150 semester hours of
acceptable college credit as well as a baccalaureate or higher degree in
order to take the CPA examination. Passing the CPA examination is one
of the requirements to become a Certified Public Accountant in Illinois. The
Illinois Board of Examiners provides more detailed information about CPA
examination candidacy.
In response to this legislative change, the Department of Accountancy revised its undergraduate and master's programs, and created a combined Bachelor/Master in Accountancy program and a Certificate in Accountancy. An overview of the options for accountancy majors and career choices consistent with each option follows:

Careers in non-public accountancy (e.g., corporate accounting, controllership, governmental accounting) and preparation for other graduate programs such as law. |

Careers in public accountancy, including preparation for CPA examination, without graduate education. Program serves only students with UIUC baccalaureate that includes the curriculum for a major in Accountancy. |

|
Careers in non-public and public accountancy, including preparation for CPA examination, with graduate education. Program serves only UIUC accountancy majors |

|||
|
Advanced study in areas such as internal and external reporting, control and systems. |
* Non-UIUC students with a bachelor's equivalent to the University of Illinois BS in Accountancy
may apply for the master's programs within these options, but not
the Bachelor/Master in Accounting Science program.
