Master of Science in accountancy with a Specialization in Taxation
Program Director: Prof. Thomas Sternburg (244-0199; t-stern@illinois.edu)
The Master of Science in Accountancy with a specialization in taxation program (MS in Accy (tax)) prepares students for entry into both non-public and public accountancy careers. The program consists of advanced study in taxation.
Admission Process
Starting fall semester 2006, admission to the Master of Science in Accountancy with specialization in taxation program may be limited and acceptance on a competitive basis. Preference will be given to students who will have completed the undergraduate accountancy curriculum at UIUC (i.e., ACCY 301, 302, 303, 304, and 405; and ACCY 312 as an elective).
-
Students who will complete the UIUC undergraduate accountancy
curriculum and are currently enrolled in the first stage of the UIUC
Bachelor/Master in Accountancy program should apply to the second stage of this program. Refer to the Bachelor/Master in Accountancy section for information on the admission process and degree requirements. -
Students who will complete the UIUC undergraduate accountancy curriculum but are NOT currently enrolled in the first stage of the UIUC Bachelor/ Master in Accountancy program should refer to the MS in Accy (tax) Program for Students from a UIUC Program Other Than the Accountancy BS/MS Program section for information on the admission process and degree requirements.
-
Students who will complete the accountancy major requirements from
another accredited college or university should refer to the MS in Accy (tax) Program for Accountancy Majors from Other Universities section for information on the admission process and degree requirements.
Tuition
Annual 2006-07 tuition (total for fall and spring semester) for the MS in Accy (tax) program is $17,000 for residents and $24,500 for non-residents.
Program tuition and fees are set annually by the University Board of Trustees and are subject to change without notice. Rate changes are usually effective at the start of the summer term of each academic year.
Degree Requirements
The course requirements for the MS in Accy with specialization in taxation are:
| Hours | Courses |
| 4 | ACCY 551 - Corporate Income Taxation |
| 4 | ACCY 552 - Partnership Income Taxation |
| 4 | ACCY 556 - Tax Research |
| 8 | Accountancy electives |

| 32 | Total for MS in Accy (tax) |
The electives, both accountancy and non-accountancy, shall form a coherent
program of study approved by a program advisor. At least 20 of the
32 total graduate hours must be in 500-level courses and at least 24 of
the 32 total graduate hours must be earned while enrolled in the UIUC Graduate
College.
Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (A = 4.0) to continue in, and graduate from, the MS in Accy (tax)program. All courses applied toward the 32 hours required for graduation must be taken for grade and not on a credit-no credit basis.
Financial Aid
A limited amount of financial aid (scholarships and graduate assistantships) is available to highly qualified applicants. Financial aid decisions for the following academic year are made during the previous spring. Applicants interested in financial aid should submit their applications as early as possible to insure full consideration. See the Scholarships and Other Financial Aid section to download the forms necessary to apply for financial aid from the Department.
The Department encourages students to re-apply to FAFSA Online when applying to graduate programs. The Federal government generally computes financial need of a graduate student independent of his/her parents. The only Federal financial aid available to graduate students is federal work-study and federal loans (currently, the maximum federal loan is $18,500 per year, of which only $8,500 may be in subsidized Stafford Loans).
