Admissions Information

Admission Requirements

Candidates are required to have a business background and the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. They must have earned a minimum grade average of "B," or the equivalent, in the last two years of undergraduate study. In addition, applicants must have completed two Principles of Accounting courses and one course in each of the following areas: statistics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, finance, marketing, and organizational behavior.

All applicants, domestic or international, are required to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). This test should be taken early enough to ensure that the results will be available to the department before action must be taken on admission.

In addition, all international applicants must take the Internet-Based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. For information on the university English proficiency requirement go to www.grad.illinois.edu/admissions/instructions/04c

Applicants with a bachelor's degree or higher from a country where English is the recognized language may request a waiver of the English proficiency requirement. For waiver information please click here.

Admission Decision

Admission to the MSA program is highly competitive. Decisions are based on the individual's composite file, including previous academic accomplishments, test scores, demonstrated potential for graduate and professional success, and references. Work experience is not required for admission but may be beneficial to the student in the classroom. Applicants are notified in writing and through e-mail as soon as the admission decision is made.

Applicants who receive an offer of admission will be asked to return an acceptance form along with a non-refundable $750 deposit to reserve their space in the program. The deposit will be credited to the student’s account during the fall semester.

English Proficiency Waiver Information

Applicants with a bachelor's degree from a country where English is the recognized language must have completed at least 2 years of full-time study within the last 5 year period from the proposed term of entry. Applicants requesting a waiver with a master's degree from an English speaking country must have completed the degree within the last 5 years from the proposed term of entry.

Joint degrees offered by an English speaking institution and a non-English speaking may not qualify for a waiver.

Waiver requests should be submitted in writing at the time of application. Waiver requests will be reviewed by the admissions committee. Applicants will be notified as soon as a decision on the request is made.
