NOTICE:
Effective beginning the fall 2007 semester, the Department will no longer offer ACCY 290 Professional Internship in Accountancy for credit (a zero-credit option may be available under certain circumstances).
In addition, effective beginning the fall 2007 semester, the Department is implementing new policies for ACCY 590 Advanced Professional Internship in Accountancy. These policies include:
- Greater use of variable credit (0 to 4 hours), in which the proposed/accomplished academic project will justify the amount of credit awarded. The modal credit awarded likely will be 2 hours.
- Limitation on the number of students who will be allowed to enroll for ACCY 590 (both in the spring and summer terms). Students should continue to apply for this course using the same procedures, but the Department will select enrollments from those applying based on the quality of the proposed academic project, letters of support from the employer, and the prior academic achievement of the student.
The culminating academic experience for students in Accountancy is an internship that provides students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained from classes to a professional environment. In consultation with a faculty mentor and business career services, an accounting internship is selected which represents a match between the student's academic preparation and their career goals. This formal, guided learning experience is supervised simultaneously by the students direct supervisor and the internship program faculty mentor. Benefits of the internship, in addition to the application and refinement of job specific knowledge and skills, include the development of professional relationships, the opportunity to discover professional strengths and areas of needed growth, and an enhanced understanding of the accounting curriculum.
