Certificate in Accountancy
The Department of Accountancy’s Certificate in Accountancy is a non-degree, post-baccalaureate program designed for UIUC accountancy students who do not enroll in the department's integrated bachelor/master program but who desire to prepare for a career in public accounting. The intent is to raise these students' competencies and semester hours to levels necessary to take the CPA examination in Illinois. The Illinois Board of Examiners provides more detailed information about CPA examination candidacy.
Admission
Admission to the Certificate in Accountancy Program may be limited and acceptance on a competitive basis. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree earned at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign including the accountancy courses required for a major in accountancy. Admission to the Certificate in Accountancy is based on a variety of undergraduate grade point averages and, at the option of the Department, on letters of reference.
Certificate applicants must have earned at least the following undergraduate grade point average minimums:

At least 2.0 (A=4.0) grade point average for all courses taken at this University,
-
At least 2.0 grade point average for courses taken in the major or field of concentration,
-
At least 2.0 grade point average for courses taken in the major or field of concentration at this University, and
-
For students not majoring in accountancy, at least a 2.0 grade point average for courses taken in accountancy at this University.
Applicants enrolled in UIUC colleges other than College of Business should submit a current transcript with their application to the Certificate in Accountancy program.
Graduation
Minimum course work for the Certificate in Accountancy normally equates to 22-26 semester hours and includes the following required courses:

Up to eight semester hours earned for courses required by the Certificate in Accountancy but taken while enrolled in a bachelor’s program and which are in excess of the requirements for that bachelor’s degree may be transferred and applied toward the Certificate in Accountancy. Students must seek the permission of the Department to take any courses not included in the above listing.
ACCY 410 (Financial Reporting Standards) and ACCY 415 (Auditing Standards and Practice) are available only to students enrolled in the Department’s Certificate in Accountancy program.
Once admitted, students have up to two semesters in which to complete the Certificate program requirements.
All candidates for the Certificate in Accountancy must have at least a 2.0 (A=4.0) grade point average on all credits counted for Certificate requirements. Students shall take for grade all courses required for the Certificate. Grades earned in courses taken within the Certificate program will affect the UIUC undergraduate GPA reported on future transcripts.
Effective August 15, 2007, first-time candidates for the Uniform CPA Examination in Illinois may receive provisional approval to take the CPA examination while completing their final semester of college coursework, provided that the Exam educational requirements are completed or in progress during this semester. This means that students can qualify to take the CPA exam and complete their first section(s) of the CPA exam during this semester. Candidates will have 120 days from the date of their first exam(s) to provide final transcripts to the Illinois Board. Students should contact the Illinois Board of Examiners for further information.
To apply for the Certificate in Accountancy, complete the application at the following link and return it to the Department of Accountancy at 360 Wohlers Hall no later than April 15.
Tuition and Fees
Annual 2009-10 tuition (total for fall and spring semester) for the Certificate program is $12,750 for residents and $24,584 for non-residents. In addition, University fees (service, health service, health insurance, general, etc.) are $2,710 per semester (estimate). Tuition includes the cost of the CPA Preparation Course (Accy 398). Please refer to the CPA Prep Course website for additional information.
Program tuition and fees are set annually by the University Board of Trustees and are subject to change without notice. Rate changes are usually effective at the start of the summer term of each academic year.
Financial Aid
The Department provides no financial aid to students in the Certificate program. Further, because the Certificate program is a non-degree program, the Department's understanding is that the Federal government and most other financial aid foundations will not provide financial aid to students in the Certificate program.
