If I am in the integrated Bachelor/Master Program in Accountancy, when can I begin taking courses for graduate credit?
Once admitted to the “first stage” of the Bachelor/Master Program in Accountancy, but prior to Graduate College admission (the “second” program stage), you may earn up to 8 semester hours and apply them toward your Master’s degree requirements. Credit for graduate courses cannot be used to satisfy both undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. In addition, the Department will not approve transfer of credit toward the graduate degree for courses with an earned grade of less than B-.
How should I register for graduate courses prior to Graduate College admission?
Prior to admission to the Graduate College, you will continue to register in courses for undergraduate credit (both 300-level and 400-level). After your admission to the Graduate College, you will petition the Department to transfer up to 8 credit hours earned from courses that qualify for graduate credit and that are not part of your undergraduate degree requirements and for which you earned a grade of B- or better.
Registering for 500-level courses prior to Graduate College admission will require you to petition the Department offering those courses.
Those students who subsequently enroll in the MAS program will submit level-change petitions to the Department of Accountancy for any 400-level and 500-level courses for which they seek to change from an undergraduate to a graduate level. With the approval of the department and Graduate College, the University will change those courses to the graduate level. The Department of Accountancy may reject a course-level change if the grade received was below the department’s standard or if the program advisor did not approve the course for the student’s graduate program of studies.
When should I submit a level-change petition?
Students should submit a petition in their first semester as a graduate student. The deadline to submit petitions is:
Fall semester – October 1
Spring semester – February 1
How do graduate level courses affect my undergraduate grade point average?
Undergraduate level students who enroll in and complete graduate level courses will have the hours and quality points for the coursework factored into their undergraduate GPA. The grade in the graduate course may impact receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with an honors designation. The only exception to this policy is ACCY 590, Advanced Professional Internship, which is offered in the Spring and Summer semesters. Because of time constraints in grading, the recording of grades and verification of degree completion, this course will initially have a deferred grade. As such, effective August 2006, the grade in ACCY 590 will not be included in the undergraduate GPA for degree candidates.
Because a course level change may change the student’s undergraduate grade point average, any change will not result in a retroactive change to the bachelor’s degree honors designation. Honors will not be rescinded or awarded based on a later change in the undergraduate GPA.
Can I apply credit from graduate courses to my undergraduate degree requirements?
Application of credit from graduate level courses to undergraduate degree requirements must have the prior approval of the Head of the department that is awarding the degree.
