Frequently Asked Questions-Advising
The application for admission to the graduate portion (the “second
stage”) of the integrated Bachelor/Master Program in
Accountancy (i.e., the Graduate College) specifies that students
will have completed at least 120 semester hours of credit by
the end of the term in which the student applies, including
ACCY 405. Which hours count toward this 120-hour requirement?
If I take more than 33 accounting hours, do the excess hours
count?
The intent of this requirement is that you be within approximately one course (4 semester hours) of completing your Bachelor of Science in Accountancy degree requirements. Therefore, courses that will not count toward your BSA requirements would not count toward the 120 semester hours in the above admission rule.
Upon a student’s petition, however, the Department will grant an exception to the 120 semester-hour requirement under the following conditions (both must be met):
- By the end of the term in which you are applying for admission to the Graduate College, you will have no more than ten courses remaining to complete your BSA and Master’s degree requirements, AND
- By the end of the term in which you are applying for admission to the Graduate College, you will have completed at least 120 semester-hour equivalents, including graduate courses taken while in the integrated program’s “first stage” but prior to Graduate College Admission and including excess undergraduate accountancy hours, if any.
An important point when making such a petition is that you understand that to complete ten courses may require three rather than two semesters of enrollment and that taking courses to satisfy your BSA requirements while enrolled in the Graduate College means that you will be required to pay graduate, not undergraduate, tuition and fees.
How should I register for graduate courses prior to Graduate College admission?
Prior to admission to the Graduate College you will continue to register in courses for semester hour credit (both 300-level and 400-level). Upon your admission to the Graduate College, the Department will transfer the equivalent of up to 8 semester hours earned from courses that qualify for graduate credit and that are not part of your undergraduate degree requirements. Registering for 500-level courses prior to Graduate College admission will require you to petition the Department offering those courses. For example:
A student admitted to the first stage of the Bachelor/Master in Accountancy program but not yet admitted to the Graduate College desires to register for the graduate version of the Financial Reporting Standards course. This student should register for 4 semester hours of ACCY 510. Upon admission to the Graduate College, the 4 semester hours in ACCY 510 will transfer to graduate credit (provided the student does not use the credit as part of his/her undergraduate requirements).
